Friday, 6th. April, 1984:
The first time that I climbed Ben Nevis was towards the end of a trip instructing a group of teenagers from Surrey in winter mountaineering skills. We were based in a military hut in Glencoe (somewhere near the current youth hostel) and, after a terrific week's weather in which we had seen them safely over Bidean, the Buchaille and the Aonach Eagach, Ben Nevis seemed like a good end to the trip, albeit by the tourist path. From memory, the top was clagged in and we spent only a few minutes investigating the snowed-up remains of the observatory and the emergency bivi shelter (where I would later spend a couple of long winter nights after mini-epics on the Ben's north face!) before taking the requisite bearings off the top and hurtling back down the long snow slopes. A good end to the trip, nevertheless.
