Spontaneity - freedom to go where you please - is generally a good thing on a walking trip and, even though this was part of a carefully planned wander from Glenfinnan northwards with a bunch of lads on a practice D of E expedition, climbing Mullach Fraoch-choire was a pretty spontaneous decision. After doing the South Cluanie Ridge on the previous day, we walked the lads in to Alltbeith from Cluanie and settled in for a cup of tea in the hostel; it didn't seem to have changed much since I had been there last in 1982.
Late afternoon, though, brought a bit of restlessness and, although its summit was sheathed in cloud, the hill south of the hostel was clearly worth an outing, not least because of the intriguing fenced off area of woodland regeneration on its flanks. I therefore decided to peg it up and down before nightfall and really enjoyed the mindless flog involved. The ground above the regenerating woodland was steep enough to be challenging, the final ridge - complete with snow patch - was narrow enough to sustain interest despite the thick mist and the twilight view of Glen Affric from the northern spur of the hill overlooking Alltbeith on the descent made the outing worth the effort by itself.
