AE Ridge, the short way down
Posted: Sun May 07, 2017 5:30 pmCracking day today, good weather of last week holding, almost no wind. Left Edinburgh 6.45am, decided to try the new motorway it being a Sunday. Fantastic run through, got last parking space in upper car park at 8.45am. Set off onto hill at 8.50am.
Really hard to add much to what others have written and the WH report (until the end, see later on) - quite a lot of folks on the hill, lots of hellos as we bashed up Am Bodach. Met a couple on the last top before the second Munro who had stayed out up top the night before, well done to them and looked like they were about to have some fun with their drone !
Most folks were moving along nicely so not much queueing despite it being a glorious day.
Anyway, to the end section - WH and others write about heading onto Clencoe Village or the like, pointedly saying not to try the Clachaig Gully. However, Ralph Storer has a line coming almost straight off Sgurr nam Fiannaidh and I watched the Glencoe Skyline racers heading straight up from where the A82 meets the single track road that heads to the Clachaig Inn. We spent a bit of time looking on the way to the SnF top and saw a couple of guys coming up from somewhere plus a lone walker heading down, way way down.
In a nutshell, there is a rough path off about 50m to the West from the summit. It's in a mess and lots of scree but it is eminently doable as long as your knees don't mind a bit of motion under your feet. Today the grass was dry so no skidding either. Don't cross over Allt an e-Sidhein, just zig zag/contour on the Eastern side and it's fairly straightforward. When you get down a bit then you can see paths in the distance and pick up faint path on the Eastern side of the Allt. Saves a lot of km. Overall walk under 7km and four hours is plenty (included a break whilst we let some slower folks try to work their way down one section and many photo/drink stops).
