First Munro - Ben Lomond

My husband and I bagged our first Munro yesterday at Ben Lomond! It was a lovely and gentle introduction to Munro walking, with enough ooft to feel like we accomplished something, but nothing unmanageable for newbies. (We've bagged some smaller hills and plenty of long-distance walks, just no Munros.)

We started up the hill from the car park at half twelve and had a mix of clouds and sunshine most of the way. We caught some rain about an hour from the summit but it passed quickly. My favourite part of the walk was the scramble to the top (I felt like a proper mountaineer!) and the friendly dogs (and people!) along the way. It's a very popular hill so plenty of people around to make a newbie feel safe.

Next time I will bring gloves (should have read the advice more closely) because it was bitter cold at the summit - could hardly feel my fingers! And possibly a thermos of hot tea next time as well!

Cannae wait for the next hill! Any suggestions welcome for someone new to navigation and map reading who is fairly fit but still getting used to the hairier bits of climbing. Preferably within 1-2 hour drive of Glasgow, but willing to get up earlier for a longer drive to a really great climb!

Brilliant
Glencoe- within 2 hrs one way
The cairngorms- within 2 hrs the other way.
Get out there

Ps - if youre not too sure about navigation, get yourself on a course. You'll reap the benefits

Well done!
I've not long started bagging munros myself. It definitely takes over your life

I did Lochnagar at the weekend and the gloves were on as soon as hit the top. Chilly at altitude!

Thanks for the recs! I've been thinking about a course. I'm sure I'll want to start branching out to the trickier walks sooner rather than later!

Thanks for this! I only just stumbled on the '10 easier munros' page a few days ago. Got my checklist now :)

In order to break yourself in gently I would suggest Ben Vorlich from Loch Earn. The walk is very similar in length, time, difficulty, etc to Ben Lomond. [I assume you went up and down the tourist path.] Get early to the start to be sure of getting parked. Don't mix it up with the Loch Lomond Ben Vorlich which is a bit trickier.

Then you could try working through this list. https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/news/our-pick-10-of-the-easier-munros/0013233/
