An ideal opportunity to explore the epicentre of Mackay country and have a dig about to find what my ancestors were made of.

A wee read through some info showed that during the months before Culloden France had been sending troops and gold to back the Jacobite rebellion- all good stuff! However, on one such occasion a French ship was being chased by an English frigate. The French tried to escape by heading into the Kyle of Tongue where their ship ran aground. The local clan, the Mackays saw this and ran down to meet the beleaguered troops, did they help them? NO!!!! They stole their gold and handed them over to the English!!!! I was totally shocked and a wee bit ashamed!! I don't mind so much that they stole the gold but to be such treacherous b******ds is unforgivable!!! :( :( :( :(

A wee bit of exercise was required so a trip up to Castle Varrich got the endorphins pumping again. This ancient seat of the Mackays predated the 18th century disgrace, so much pleasure was taken not only in the wee climb up but the views up the kyle were fantastic and I could also see the WH bunkhouse venue. 8) 8)

I'm glad to say that more recently the Mackays have redeemed themselves by being one of the founding families of the very rare church in Brora. :D :D
