Saturday, 5th. August, 2017:
My son Tommy and I had spent most of a week in Affric, Cannich and Strathfarrar and, with a couple of days to fill before he met up with friends in Bute, we decided to head for Mull. On the way and rather by chance, we passed through Strontian which, as Tommy had just spent the last four years using various isotopes of Strontium to date meteorites, we thought was worth a look. Unsurprisingly, given that this is the only place in the UK to give its name to an element, the little tourist information centre was well supplied with geology; recommended!

The next day, though, we were in Tobermory and the weather was beautiful so we decided to wander up Ben More and explore the west coast of the island. We had a brilliant day, heading out towards Iona to look at the bedded basalts - Icelandic type scenery - and, after climbing the Ben, heading north along a wonderful coastline (sea eagles overhead) to Calgary and the pub at Dervaig. The only blot on the day was that Ben More retained its cloud cap throughout our time on the hill - but, then, you can't have everything...
