Autumn in the borders

Windy Gyle from Barrowburn

There's something about the light in the Autumn that makes the soft, rolling hills of the Borders look spectacular. This weekend was one of the rare dry days, and Sunday was quite calm, so a good time to visit Windy Gyle.

Starting point in Barrowburn - the Wedder Leap car park, site of the drowning of a sheep (wedder) thief, according to the information sign.

Looking along the Hepden Burn from the bridleway.

Looking back down the Hepden Burn towards Barrowburn.

Middle Hill looking a bit different now that it's recently been clear-cut.

Looking up to Uswayford along the Usway Burn from the Middle. The footbridge takes you over the burn and down to Alwinton along Clennel Street.

Joining Clennel Street to head up to the border ridge.

The final rise to the border ridge with the slopes of Cheviot to the right (east).

A rare beautiful dry and pleasant day out on Windy Gyle. I'm Looking forward to repeating the route this winter, when it can be a very different beast.
