For a pair of hillwalkers currently having to live in the Fens of Lincolnshire, this walk was our first on a Grand Tour of Scotland. Staying in nearby Rattray, we drove to the small parking spot near the farm buildings. We're both golfers, so we probably dawdled a bit too much watching the golfers making light of pulling trolleys up steep hills; but we were also aware of where golf balls were likely to be coming from, which is something you must watch out for on the start of this walk and at the end. The 19th Hole looked inviting for refreshments after the walk, but we had Pitlochry and the Dam to visit later.
The initial climb up did seem to be steep in places, but when we met someone who ran up and back down, just a few weeks after a heart by-pass operation, we tried not to sound too puffed out. After all, this was our first hill climb - or so we told ourselves!
The views at the top are worth the climb. We sat on the bench with lunch and looked down on the rain clouds over Pitlochry. Suggestions that on a good day you can "see" Glencoe beyond Loch Tummel, were tantalising but a bit unbelievable on our visit. It had something to do with the torrential downpours!
We were amazed by the sight of a telecoms mast, and the strong signals on our mobiles. Something we don't get at home. No, we weren't texting in such a beautiful spot, just taking pictures.
