Mount Keen

The storm had arrived and I'd been watching various areas and their forecasts for days now.

A quick "saunter" was sought and I had a few in mind. ( if it's good enough for John Muir it's good enough for me"

The Merrick was out the question as Galloway was going to get hit by the remains of the storm.
The trossachs and Ben Venue was going to be wet and windy all day.
Gairich would be wet and windy.
Mount keen would be windy but dry

Mount keen it was then as I changed maps 5 minutes before heading out the door at 6.

Wet and windy till just past Perth then the rain stopped and the wind eased a little.
About 15 miles along the B966 and track and there's a great parking area in invermark.
Nice wee arch in the village of Edzell
Cairns on the hills everywhere. Does anyone know what the large cone shaped one is/ represents?
Good wee walk along to the Queens Well which looks better up close than in all the photos of it.
On past the cottage and over the 1st stream. Found a plaçe upstream about 100 m to boulder hop across- but on the way back just ploughed through it.
2nd stream had a big of a metal fence/ cattle grid on it to cross.
On up to the main crossroads where it's right turn and head up the gravelly pitched path to the summit cairn and trig.
Some good views back down Glen esk and across to lochnagar which had cloud on top.
Thought it would have been busier up here but there was only me- and one other in front with a highland pony who had met up with a 4x4 at the crossroads.
The same 4x4 passed me on the descent with a stag in the back.
And so it was back down where it rained on and off. Didn't bother me too much as it was hitting my back.
Paid " invermark castle " a wee visit before going back to the car. And another 4x4 passed with another stag in the back!!
Nice area and good viewing for wildlife. I expect this would be a lot busier on a better day or the weekend.

Cap doffed.

Cheers

The conical monument is the Maule Monument - details on the "Hill of Rowan" walk description. Nice report - you met the same pony and 4x4 as me when I was up Mount Keen today. And annoyingly you sound like you had slightly the better of the weater - I'd held off going up Tuesday because of the possibility of leftover blowiness from Ophelia... Ah well!

Yeah, I got lucky with the weather. Looked back a few times on the descent, and the cloud had moved in and covered the summit.
