With the wee weather girl saying that the Munro peaks might just make it above the cloud i thought i would take the chance and head out on Wednesday to Ben Oss and Beinn Dubhchraig. The cloud was low and it did not look promising when i set off from Motherwell at 6am.Scooted along the M8 (where are all these cars and trucks going at that hour) and the journey to Dalrigh was uneventful.
With Autumn as my favorite season i was looking forward to the walk up through the old Scot's pine section and the silver birch which would now be taking on some glorious colour.I wasn't disappointed, the trees were pretty stunning with the still/dry weather showing them off to their best.
The hike uphill was in cloud but i could see the brightness above and as i reached the ridge just below the summit of Dubhchraig i walked out into bright sunshine and amazing views.I will just add some of the photographs of the trip, they should describe the day i had.:-).

David.

It's always nice to get an inversion isn't it? I get quite a few in the Lakes and Snowdonia but never really in Scotland as I just get clag there (apart from my Ben More & Stobinian report). That's beautiful woodland on the way to those two isn't it?

Some bracket fungi are edible - I don't think the ones that aren't are poisonous - just inedible as in too tough to eat - that one looks pretty tough but you can't really say without proper ID I suppose. See my monster mushroom on the Wildlife etc. page that I had for tea tonight though! And it didn't feed a family... just me :D

Great pictures. Hopefully I'll break through the clouds one time in a similar manner, looks like a fun experience!

Thanks folks.

MC,i would love to know about gathering wild food but find it hard to get hill time nowadays never mind learning other stuff. It was a great day,the old pine forest is fabulous and i was surprised to see a lot of young pine trees that didn't look like they were planted by the forestry folks. The deer fence had a massive hole as well so how the young trees have made it i don't know.
That's me set for my autumn/winter walks.Ben More and partner next.

Richard Mabey's 'Food For Free' book is the staple in our household - it's really good. My mother and I both make 'hedgerow stews' in our slow cookers and there's even a lot of leaves and things you can put in salads (providing they're not where doggies can pee on them). My guests will never eat my hedgerow stews though (particularly my walking buddy Richard) as they don't trust them/my knowledge. But I've been eating them for years and I'm still here! And they're actually much more tasty than ones with bought veg etc. (or maybe it just seems that way to a Yorkshirewoman who's got food for free! )
