Meall Reamhar and Meall nan Caorach

Parked just off the A822 at the start of the track to Girron – enough space for a car well away from the access to the track.

Set off up the track, past the buildings at Girron, sharp right and off SE.

At the high point in the track, as it started to move away from Meall Reamhar NN922341, branched off more directly southwards and up the slope towards the summit. Some deep snow sections and heather slowed progress a little.

Then off fairly steeply downhill in a NE direction to the path before heading straight up to Meall nan Caorach. Steep in places but no need for the winter hardware.

Initially north from the summit then west down to the track and an easy walk back to the car.

Meall Dearg

Drove up the A822, through Amulree and on to the A826. Stopped at a layby on the east side of the road at NN898435. Walked up the road to the start of the forest on the west side but had to backtrack a little to the south to go via a gate as the fence was topped with barbed wire.

Walked down towards the Cochill Burn. This was the potentially awkward bit. The 1:25,000 showed a footbridge but it turned out just to be a continuation of the fence over the water which wouldn’t take my weight. Wandered downstream to find a slightly shallower crossing point and went for it – don’t normally wear gaiters except in winter but they came in very handy and stopped almost all the water getting in.

Continued over some boggy ground until reaching Wade’s military road at which pint I picked up the hill track marked on the 1:25,000. Stayed on this track to NN889415 after which I headed west and up to the summit through some deep snow sections.

Retraced my steps back to the car using the same route.
