Munro Nineteen

After climbing Ben Avon and Beinn a'Bhuird on the previous day, this section of a trek through the Cairngorms with a bunch of school mates was a reasonably easy amble up towards Ben Macdui from Faindouran Lodge on the Avon. We had left our options open as to whether to head for the Shelter Stone or Coire Etchacan but some reasonably good weather suggested that the extra few miles of the southern route would prove worthwhile so, once we got to the howf at the Falls of Avon, we turned left. It wasn't far up to the col at the head of the Lairig an Laiogh and, from there, the top of Beinn a'Chaorainn was only about 1,000 feet away. Once back at the col, we headed over to the Hutchison Memorial Hut in sunshine and then up into Coire Etchacan. Several of us spent the late afternoon bouldering in sunshine on a prominent rock on the slopes above the point where the burn leaves the corrie but, with snow just a few hundred feet above the tents, it was destined to be a cold night.
