I was staying at Mar Lodge with friends and we woke on Sunday to a dull, wet morning. Still, we wanted a walk out so we headed up the hill right behind the lodge, Creag Bhalg, which, though short and very easy, gave us a very pleasant morning. A good track left the narrow road virtually behind the back entrance to the lodge and it traversed very gradually up the hillside, crossed another track before heading up again through some wonderful Scots pine and heather. Soon there was a small cairn on the right marking the start of a narrow path through the heather, past a dramatic dead tree, all the way to the summit where, despite the low cloud and rain, we enjoyed some great views of the higher tops surrounding us.
