Moss won a competition to be Angus Ambassasdog for the 2018/2019 year and one of the perks of that was a free overnight stay at Balmuirfield B&B on the outskirts of Dundee! So having had a good nights sleep and a good breakfast and with the troublemaker at home, Moss and headed over to Newtyle to walk up to the monument on Kinpurney Hill.
There was only one other car in the car park so plenty of space to park. One dog walker was just going through the car park. Coinneach is reactive to dogs and even though he wasn't with us I seemed to forget that and waited until the dog was gone before getting Moss out. Guess I'm just in that habit now. They were the only ones we saw, we didn't see anyone else on the walk at all! The route is signposted and the first stretch is along the road though we took the option of going onto one of the stubble fields where Moss could have a run.
At the farm there is a signpost directing to the den. There's a new house in the process of being built here. The path follows the burn up the hill where we were accompanied by two dippers who kept flying on just ahead of us passing some waterfalls and over a few bridges - the final bridge is damaged leaving just a single plank to walk across.
The path turns away from the burn through a kissing gate and onto open moorland where Moss decided it would be good fun to start rolling back down again...
- Rolling, rolling, rolling
There were no signs of any sheep so Moss was allowed to remain off lead. The path narrowed for a bit before widening out a bit leading through another kissing gate. The views opened up but it was hazy, we could see down to the Tay though and across to the more distant Angus hills.
The monument came into view and this was the only time we spotted a handful of sheep grazing though there were plenty of signs there have been a lot more up there. The grassy track led all the way up to the monument which is accessed by some stone steps. The wind picked up at the top, but around the monument itself it became really strong and I nearly lost my balance going in and then on the way back out again.
Not far from the monument is the trig point and a view indicator. We stopped here for a little while before descending the same way. A decent enough stretch of the legs especially when I haven't been doing much lately!
