Very enjoyable walk in beautiful and varied countryside on a sunny spring day. Having moved to Edinburgh fairly recently I'm just becoming familiar with the Lammermuirs and thought this my best walk there so far (and much quieter than the Pentlands that I'm also enjoying discovering).

Maybe just one suggestion for others o consider: I found the last part of the walk on the tarmac roads the least attractive (although still nice scenery with views of surrounding farmland and up to the hills). With exactly the same route it would be possible to do the tarmac first by using the alternative parking arrangement given in Stage 1 notes or by doing the route in reverse.

It’s also possible to do a shorter circuit without any road walking by starting at East Hopes, reversing the WH route to Lammer Law and then returning via White Knowe and Crow Cairn, and picking up a grassy track down to West Hopes.

Thanks jmarkb, tried your suggested variation on the route today with two friends - pleasant autumn day and very enjoyable walk. Think I prefer it to the given route ending with longish stretch on tarmac. Thanks for the advice. Alan
