Posted: Sun May 19, 2019 4:09 pmRed hot day (23c) Keen to try new GPS. C dropped me off at SP and I headed along path via gates. After a k became steep, then steeper - still on Pap path. R fork to SgF came much later (and higher) than guide suggested. It was eroded rocky, uneven and even steeper than before. Struggled to get bearing from GPS (unfamiliarity with new model) but can now work it fine.
Long tough ascent to summit ridge where L turn is more acute then map sugests, but much less steep and smoother going. Final ascent a joy with great views as you progress along ridge with steep cliffs to L. To be fair views are grand from about 100m altitude. From the trig point (broken) views superb and AE ridge in clear sight, both imposing and scary.
Return could be awkward if you lose bearing as path faint at times, but if you are on it the 'no-go' path to Clachaig Gully is clear enough to avoid. Even on the recommended path the going is awful,the combo of powdery scree, large and small sharp edged boulders and steep descent adding to risk of a tumble. Tough but well worth it for great summit exp and views.
