Time for the traditional 2nd Jan walk to blow away the festive cob webs. Chose Meall Glas from Glen Lochay as we had previously done Sgiath Chuil (last January) & new that the Lochay road would be ok.
There is now a parking area with a sign saying 'no parking beyond this point' a fair bit before the large area at the locked gate. We chose to ignore it & carry on to the end to find two other cars there with three guys who were doing the same hill. We had a discussion whilst 'booting up' as to whether the foot bridge at the far end of the lower track was still there, as two that are marked have definatly gone. We decided that we were going across the bridge were we had parked & then walking along the lochay utill we picked up the track at the ford. This was fine as frozen ground, but would be hellish in warmer wetter conditions. Some very slipy & icy tributaries to shuffle accross on the way.

We then followed the steeply climbing track to its end at roughly 720 meters. Carried on a bit to gain the ridge to Beinn Cheathaich & then up very hard snow & ice to said top. Down to the bealach & up to the summit of Meall Glas. Met one of the guys from the other party coming the other way. They had gone along the track to the far end & straight up Meall Glas. The bridge is there but pretty rotten in parts.

Summit lunch for us & then retraced our route back to the track except rather than going back up over Beinn Cheathaich we contoured around the side. Missed the track & had to go back up a little to regain it.

As we had started late (for us) it was getting dark as we got to the lower part of the track we decided that we would cross the lochay just to the left of the ford. Going straight across is less distance. Slid gingerly across the ice which gave way a couple of times but feet remaind dry. :D

The day was good weather overcast, but with high cloud so good views all around if a bit gray. :)

Nice to see that one again after doing it in reverse back in early November and combining Beinn nan Imirean too. Love the first shot of the frozen River Lochay. We could have done with it being frozen like that - we opted against wading the ford so early in the day and continued up to the footbridge near Badour which was a slippery experience! On the descent of Cheataich we walked along the north side of the river and under the pipeline - and you're not wrong about it being a bogfest. Wish we'd got the same views of Ben More, Lawers et al..... :(

Thanks Greame

Even with the cloud the views were great. Although this neck of the woods doesn't get a lot of good press i have enjoyed my trips here.

Last time (jan 2010) we crossed the Lochay just passed the ford, straight being preferable to diagonaly, but we did get a bit wet.

Regards
