Unlike others, we only had time to visit Mingulay and that was difficult enough. Boat operators need a minimum of 6 customers to take on the visit and we had tried twice before on previous visits to Barra but had been foiled by lack of numbers. This time we were booked for 8 June but were the only going. The boat, Hebridean Sea Tours must have felt sorry for us as they offered us the next day and, after trying around, found another 2 customers. We had nearly 4 hours on the island, time to go up Carnan, look round the village, watch a golden eagle and then sit in the sun watching puffins fly past.
This was an excellent trip, leaving Castlebay at 10.00 and getting back nearer 5pm. We must have seen 20 or 30 basking sharks on the out and back crossing, a real privilege.
This operator also visits St Kilda and has a very good boat.
