Another sunny day, more remote hills. We haven't done much walking in Scotland in the summer recently and were almost put off by the midge forecast of 5. Luckily we went anyway and found a high carpark overnight for the van above Ardmorlich, which seemed to get just enough breeze to keep the beasties away. There weren't any at the Glen Moidart road end either, I'm not sure why not. We took the standard route up Glen Moidart,
though lost the 'path' crossing the rough wet ground between the tracks. It looked nicely signposted going the other way. The route up the glen wasn't as boggy as the SMC book suggested, with lots of planks along the track. We wandered on pathless past vestiges of houses and the outlines of lazy beds at Ulgary, it was amazing to think of several families once living up there, farming, one of whom was a famous piper. It must have been hard in the winter.
There was a nice broad shoulder above the gorge, then we gained the upper glen and finally worked our way up to the summit. This was a great place to be, remote but surrounded by many hills that we had previously climbed. Another late lunch.
- Looking over to Beinn Mhic Cedidh etc
- Looking towards Beinn Gaire
- Druim Fiachlach, I think
We made our way across to Beinn Gaire, over a few obviously false summits. It was straightforward but took me a shockingly long time. We caused significant upset to a snipe which circled us, making continuous alarm calls. Finally near the summit we left it behind only to alarm a golden plover instead! Then we admired Rhum and a different set of hills, before working our way down towards the bealach,
- Descending from Beinn Gaire
traversing on to the nose, and down to the bridge over the river. My knee was tired on the descent but it caused no trouble marching out along the track.
