A beautiful sunny day with little wind. This is a great loop with views out to the Solway on the way out and across to the Moffat Corbetts on the return. From the end of road, we walked to Over Phawhope Bothy and peeped inside (a settee! and could the owners of the cycles and clothes hanging up be still asleep in the bedroom at 10:45am? we didn't look) then up the track beside and across the burn. When the track ended, we carried on along animal tracks then climbed through grass onto the ridge, popping out fairly near the summit of Ettrick Pen.
- Distant firth and Lakeland
- Looking towards Loch Fell and Croft Head
We carried on to Wind Fell, and ate lunch looking over to the firth. Then we separated, the Hare extending the route over Loch Fell and Croft Head while I headed directly for Ettrick Head and up Capel Fell. From there, I meandered back along the ridge beside the wall.
- Towards Hart Fell
As I got lower, the path beside the wall deteriorated. I decided to take a short cut across country to Potburn. Possible not a good idea since the break between the trees had been planted with new trees, slowing progress even more than usual. But soon I was back on the track then not far to the roadend.
Here is the approximate route.
