I started walking in 2008 with Ali and John who started a few years before me and they had a head start for a fair few Munros that I would eventually catch up on. Our completion was always going to be Beinn Sgritheal due to the proximity of one of our favourite eating and drinking places, the Glen Elg Inn. However, after some consideration of friends and family members who would do the walk with us, we changed earlier this year to Ben More on Mull a more straight forward route for the less adventurous.
Ali booked a farmhouse at Ardnacross for 12 of us for a week and others were travelling on the day of the completion. There was a bit of debate what day we would walk but I said due to travel etc it had to be the Saturday come what may re weather etc. What could go wrong?
As it turned out I think we had the best day ever with clear blue skies and high temps of about 17 degrees. We were joined by about 20 people, family members friends, Kev Mcintosh, Badge, Andy Isles, Fife Flyer, Parminder, Martin Gilmour and his 2 boys.
So we invaded the hill in about 3 waves, the first being 2 hours before the main set off time of 10:30, this was wife's and Andy Isles (who hasn't done a Munro in about 4 years due to ill health) who do not walk the hills and needed plenty time to get up to the top, which indeed they did, fantastic effort by wave 1.
Wave 2 the folks that left on time while I waited for a couple of stragglers and brought up the rear.
All the worries for this day for the last few weeks were needless as the weather was brilliant the company was great, including friends from Canada that came just for this event, thanks again Tim and Kristine. A drone of the pipes was heard as we neared the summit, to us thinking, my god the wife's have excelled here, they hired a piper
Not to be unfortunately, sadly, it was the scattering of the ashes for Johnny Paton the Minister from Mull who died on An Tealach in May this year, RIP Johnny.
If the day couldn't get any better, we had a White Tailed Eagle join us just hovering overhead for some time, I was wondering who was looking down on us, may be a past hill walking friend we lost last year?
After a good hour or more on the summit enjoying the fiz and sunshine it was time to descend and head back to the farm for a well-earned BBQ.
