Last and best day of an ill-timed trip based at Glen Nevis YH. I'd done this walk a few winters back but it gave two new Munro ticks for Karl. Varied weather with some sunny spells, a brief blizzard and lots of spindrift blowing around in the breezy conditions. The path up into Coire Mhusgain was banked out in places, which gave a few exposed traverses above the burn, but elsewhere provided a magnificent route to the heights. A thoroughly enjoyable day and one of the best, short Munro trips in Lochaber.

Looked like a decent day out 8) . It was only an ill-timed trip in the sense that the next day was even better - pick any 5 days this side of Christmas any you would probably have ended up with a similar outcome!

Thanks Malky, yes we really enjoyed this one; it was nice to get some views and a bit of sunshine for a change. Going up Stob Ban felt almost alpine. It was a shame we had to travel back home the next day, but we can take some consolation in what you say about the weather since Christmas. :)

Thanks Grisu! It's a cracking little walk, this one. If you haven't done it I'd thoroughly recommend it. :)

It's on my list, dav2930, definitely! I already know the neighbours of the Ring of Steall, it is a stunning landscape and I had great views. Looking forward to this walk may be in summer!

Brilliant route this. I have done it in summer conditions but would love to go back and get a day like this for it. One day. Cool too how the route looks like Scooby Doo's heid!

Thanks ST. So many great routes in this area aren't there? :)

Thanks Graeme D. Well worth a repeat on a good winter's day. I see what you mean about the route looking like Scooby Doo's heid! I never noticed that - well spotted! :)

Thanks Dizzy. Seems like a previous life now, but this was one of my favourite days out during a pretty poor winter. And ironically, all through this lockdown, look at the weather we've been getting! Let's hope it's not long before we can get out on the hill again (will have to try to interpret the vague announcement made by BJ just now). :?

A challenging but hugely rewarding trip - must seem like a distant memory now.
Having only been up there once and saw virtually nothing (in summer  ), these hills are on the redo list - maybe need to consider a good winter's day now. Cheers :)

Looks like a great trip. Sadly I missed a fair bit of the snowy time due to various hospital stuff, so it's good to be reminded of what it's like.

I never fail to be surprised at how different a place seems to be in winter as compared with summer. When I walked this in summer, I thought I would never forget the views on the ascent of Stob Ban, and the traverse across to Mullach nan Coirean; but once again I was struggling to orientate myself with some of the pics...

What was the descent through the wood like off-path? To me any green with tree symbols looks dreadful on a map!!

Thanks RH. Those times seem so carefree and innocent now, when we had no idea of the nightmare that was just around the corner. Yes, definitely worth a repeat in clearer conditions than you unfortunately got. Hopefully the big hills will be open to us again before winter, but a good winter's day for these two would be hard to beat! :)

Thanks AK. At least it wasn't one the best winters to have missed out on. Here's hoping for a better one to come!

On the descent through the plantations, we kept to the forestry tracks and paths. They're not shown on the WH map at the scale presented, but might be if you zoom in to 1:25000 scale. They're shown, e.g., on the BMC Harvey's map. From the NE ridge of Mullach, follow the deer fence down to a big stile crossing it into the woods, where a good path leads down to a big forestry track crossing the Allt a' Choire Riabhaich. Follow it to the right until it almost turns back on itself at the Allt a Choire Dheirg, where a good, smaller path heads straight down to the road just W of the Lower Falls car park. Hope that helps. :)
