Late lunch at the top of North Berwick Law

A trip up North Berwick Law on a sunny day is always a treat and a decent lunch in your rucksack makes it extra special.

I'd spent the morning in Edinburgh trying to sort out a new car and by midday I was about ready to do murder. Feeling the need to blow off some steam, I caught the X5 bus from Princes Street out to North Berwick. After getting off in the middle of town (if you're just going up the Law then bus takes you closer as it carries on through the houses towards Tesco) I wandered down the main street, pausing at the butcher's to admire the pies.

Now a Scotch pie is often a disappointment - a vaguely meaty hockey puck wrapped in leather - but I had a hunch that this might be different. Pie double-wrapped and stowed in the rucksack, I picked up the John Muir Way through North Berwick's park and a housing scheme to the foot of the Law.

Still feeling a long way short of fitness, I wheezed a bit on my way up, but made fairly good progress, sitting down for lunch out of the wind just shy of the summit. Sure enough, the pie crust was crisp and the filling warm and tasty - excellent.

I hung around at the top for about half-an-hour before taking a roundabout route to the bottom and then cutting across east and then down to the beach at North Berwick. A fine afternoon out.
