The warning about taking the left path is wise! We didn't and ended up contouring along a path through birchwoods on the lochside which was very very muddy. Eventually we were forced to climb, and we found the path described here. Although the weather was very murky, we got to the village and, more importantly, the bothy where we could organise being warm and dry.
We hiked back much more quickly on the official path, and found the point where we went wrong - someone's made a wee cairn that showed the division of the paths so do look out for it.
