While spending a week at a cottage on Loch Morar, we (Neil, Duncan, Calum and I) decided to tackle one of the munroes in Glenfinnan. Both would have taken at least 9 hours and given that this was the first proper hillwalk of the year because of covid19 that would have been pushing it.
It was cloudy but dry when we left, parking at the glen finnan monument car park. The first hour was on a paved road underneath the viaduct - famous for the Harry Potter films - up to near glen finnan lodge. Bikes would have been good here! Slow progress due to Calum! Once off the road we headed up a track and then a handy sign showed us the path off this track up the ridge. At first this was fairly easy going but it got steeper towards the top. Great to be out on the hills again and luckily I didn't feel too tired going up. We stopped a lot but made it to the top in about 4 hours. Luckily the clouds lifted a little to give us a view and we could see Loch Morar and Loch Arkaig plus a glimpse of the Knoydart peaks. It was chilly so didn't stay too long.
There were a few people about, including some running the horseshoe between Sgurr nan C and Shurr Thuilm. As we descended the clouds cleared and the sun came out.. it was tough going on the knees - must remember the poles next time!
A long day out for the first outing of the year but very enjoyable.
Celebrated with a fish supper in Mallaig.
