Decided to do these two at the last minute and didn't set off till nearly 10.30am. I estimated it would take me around 5hrs but did not account for the snow which i reckon added an extra hour at least onto the walk. The walk up the track to just past the opencast mine was fine, just a bit slippy in places, as the track had been cleared. Once off the track it was a differant story with the snow occasionally hard enough to walk on but mostly soft and knee deep in places making the going tough and adding a fair bit of time onto the walk. I decided to do Farragon Hill first and take Meall Tairneachan on the way back.I arrived back at the car at 4.30pm but due to the snow on the track i didn't require my headtorch. This was a long hard day on two very enjoyable Corbetts with some lovely views from the summits.

Very nice JC :D Some great shots there of what looks like a good little walk. Looks like you had a great day, despite it being tough in places :D

Thanks for the replies it was a good day though there was a few bad words being uttered once i was off the track and making my way through the snow. Definately a winter walk though i'd wait till it gets a bit colder for the snow to harden up. The moon shot turned out not bad though it did look better with the naked eye.

They are still in use although i was told they would be closing them down in the near future. They'll also show you round them during the summer months

I'm getting lazy this winter - didn't head out onto the hills until 2:30pm this Sunday.

Looks like a grand day out - that's some amount of snow that has been bulldozed off the track :o

Using the bike made Tairneachan one of my easiest walks of the year, but I remember the ground between the two being very rough even without the snow. We did Farragon from near Dull then walked back to Strathtay - took ages!
