Nice one Scoob, a day on the hills you'll never forget :D Wonder why Mountain Rescue didn't just send Taylor 94 to rescue you if he was in the vicinity :D

I'll echo luckyguy's thought's and say that, as a newbie to this hill walking malarkey, it's really helpful to read reports like yours. Brilliant stuff!

Graeme Dewar wrote:I think the whole thing about SoD versus what your compass and/or GPS device is telling you is a very pertinent one. Dooterbang has made the point that recently it was his SoD that was correct whereas his compass was faulty (pardon the Basil pun!). No reason why a GPS could not also be faulty. ... My colleagues and I from school are always telling kids when we are out on expeditions that you should never absolutely trust one "source of navigational information" in isolation - you use all sources available to build up a picture that you can then question and test and establish if your original assumption or decision was correct. Easy to do on nice days with no pressure - somewhat harder in situations like this!

..

This is excellent advice. I variously use SOD, map & compass and GPS for navigation and each of them has let me down on different occasions. Using at least 2 (of which one is map & compass) is sensible.

brilliant read. glad there isnt any tutting and head shaking at this adventure, even better that scoob can make a joke out of it, basil fawlty on the hills
im pretty sure the mrt team would have been happy to help a well prepared gent who happened to get lost, after all, its what they volunteer for. if they criticised everybody that needed them, people would be very reluctant to call them out in the first place and end up in deeper trouble, thats my take on it anyway.
one burning question i have, who is taylor94 and why is he shrouded in mystery? must be a top bloke.

taylor94 is off-topic as this is scoob999's walk report and he has confirmed that t94 actually had no part in it. We've had requests to remove all reference to him from the forum so please keep any discussion on this to private messages. Thankyou

Wow what a report, especially after seeing your 'make shift bed' the other week. A lot of lessons in there for many!
I'm another one off to get my GPS instructions out for a start

Thanks, Scoob for sharing your experience of all this. I'm pretty sure it's hard telling that story! But I can see we are all learning from your report - me too. And BTW - when's the film coming out?
