Lurg Mhor and Bideina'Choire Sheasgaich (Aug 08)

This report covers a walk we done in Aug 2008, and I posted in here following comments on another thread about what it involves.

These two munros lie in the Glen Cannich to Glen Carron area and are very remote. It's a significant undertaking which can be broken by a stay over at one of the bothies in the area. We stayed in Bendronaig Bothy overnight which, rare for a bothy these days, was empty.

Taking a bike would be an option but the track in climbs for a good hour, then descends to the bothy and I'd imagine that the route out would involve a lot of pushing as again, it was a climb for about an hour on the track to reach the high point which is at around NG 975 375. It's a good landrover track almost to the foot of the hills, but the paths up the hills are faint and hard to find apart from on the ridge itself between the two munros.

We started off at the well signed 'Walkers Carpark' immediately on the left as you enter the gates to Attadale Gardens. The hills to the north from Attadale looked great.



We passed the entrance to the gardens. A nice lily pond.



The track winds as it climbs up through some nice scenery.



And we were glad to reach the high point as it descended toward Bendronaig. Our first view of the hills ahead. Lurg Mhor on the right, Cheesecake in the centre.



It's a nice bit of the country here, and it was turning out to be a fine evening.



2.5hrs after leaving the car, we arrived at the bothy.





The place was in great order and after we through out some dodgy drink which had been left by the previous occupants, we settled down for the night. Haven't these folk heard of 'pack it in - pack it out'?!??

The weather didn't look great as we headed out on the sunday morning. We intended to shoot up Sail Riabhach, but the long grass and low cloud, and the heavy packs, we opted instead to go up to Loch Calavie and up to the bealach.





From the bealach, the cloud was still low, but the view north was impressive.



The summit of Lurg Mhor cleared briefly for a photo.





Cheesecake is in there somewhere!



The cloud was breaking and lifting and the views were brilliant.





And then we were at the summit of Cheesecake.





Brilliant views.





Then it was back on the long and winding road to Attadale.

Thats a good long walk you done there Ian. It seems such a long way from Attadale to the Munros on the map though. I think that I would be looking at going in from Glencarron lodge area and bagging the other two on the same two day walk. What do you think?

In hindsight, it probably would have been. However, we'd done the other two (can't remember their names ) on a long day out from Craig. I suppose we'd broken the area into easier chunks, deferring the longer walk until later in the bagging expedition.
