What a lovely report.

Shows exactly why i always carry a camera on walks, the opportunity to look back all misty eyes at past adventures.
I'm just glad i started hitting the hills after i'd gone baldl! It would've been heartbreaking to watch it disappear. (i'll still have to watch my beard turn greyer with every year though)

It is great to read this and see the pictures from a different age. It reminded me of my initial walks in the Lakes and Wales with the school and the scouts.
Wish I still had pictures from those days. Peter Storm waterproofs that made you sweat buckets, canvas and leather rucksacks (lightweight was not even imagined then) and does anybody remember wearing 2 pairs of socks with the short ones turned over the top of the boots?

Great article! Brings back memories of my first trip through the Lairig Ghru as a 20 year old in 1997. I'd embarked the previous day on a spur-of-the-moment hitch-hike around Scotland and, starting in Edinburgh, had ended up in Braemar. The Lairig Ghru looked like my best chance of getting to Aviemore and thence north. What a great decision! 28 or so miles later, I was eating a haggis supper by the side of the A9 and thumbing a lift. Must dig out the photos.

That was a great read down memory lane. It's good to see how times have changed but the hills and buildings remain the same. Wish i'd got into walking earlier as i was pushing 40 before i took it up seriously. Great stuff

Great story and photo's, can't beat bit of nostalgia.
I remember Beanfeast, but was more of an aficionado of the 'Vesta' dehydrated meals - especially the 'Beef Madras' flavour. Don't think they were very wholesome but always felt like a gourmet feast in a Bothy.

Congrats on the walk report of the month award, Mrs Santa, that's a lovely account of the old days. Apart from that, I reckon you deserve it for digging out the old prints and digitalising them alone, must have been loads of work (same goes for some of dogplodder's recent reports I find)! My old photographs are all glued into photo-albums, which means digitalising is rather unthinkable, but also that once I do sit down over them, I won't get up again until a couple of hours later - it's delightful looking at the haircuts and fashion!
