There is an excellent special bus, the AD122, which runs along the route of the wall from Easter until late October - Carlisle to Hexham. The full timetable disappeared from the Hadrian Wall Trust website a few days ago but I'd already downloaded it should you need want it.
Which did you prefer, walking E to W or W to E?
A difficult one to be honest. I enjoyed it in both directions - E-W because it was ending somewhere I hadn't visited before and W-E because I was virtually walking home. Obviously, W-E also has the advantage of the prevailing wind.
The best bit is the central section between Gilsland and Chollerford and I'd probably say that was the better directionas you get most of the ascent out of the way in the first half.
