Is Nikwax Leather Conditioner enough?

Is Nikwax Leather Conditioner enough?

Postby katastrofa » Tue Sep 18, 2012 2:20 pm

I have new brown leather walking boots with Gore-Tex. I treated them with Nikwax Leather Conditioner (www.nikwax.com/en-gb/products/productdetail.php). Do I need to apply some boot wax after that? If yes, then is it better to use brown wax, or colourless?

I always found nikwax boot stuff was atrocious, actually dried out the leather instead of conditioning it somehow..

The best stuff I have ever used was Brasher leather conditioner.. You dont even have to wait for the leather to dry for it to be effective

I just apply boot polish, leave it overnite and buff up to a nice shine :D
Looks weird with shiney boots on the hill but it's the only thing iv'e found that beads the water on my boots, and iv'e tried almost everything :(
I found that waxing in my opinion sealed the boots breathability, ending up with wet feet anyway through overheating! boot polish is cheap, and why not have shiny boots on the hills :D

The instructions for Nikwax Conditioner for Leather:

... suggest that it's all you need - doing the same job as a traditional wax.

See more here.

I have the same problem with Nikwax, I don't think it likes Goretex boots. The Brasher stuff you linked to is the stuff I always use and it works a treat.

Hmm, that isnt quite the right packaging, although it says the right thing on the tin.. maybe they have rebranded?
This is definately the right stuff..

You dont need anything else, unless you get a gouge out of the leather.. In that situation I would use brown boot polish, fill the gouge with a generous amount then set light to it.. forms a nice waxy seal again :)

I use the Brasher cream but I find its come off after less than an hour of rain or wet grass, what else could I use?

My mate uses beeswax and his feet are allways dry and he doesn'y have goretex boots. Apparantly it's what bikers use on their leathers :D

Grangers G Wax (think it's beeswax similar to JC's comment above) on my Meindl Burmas which are goretex lined - turned the leather smooth but not worried what they look like. On my Scarpa SLM3s, I use Scarpa HS12 cream which is silicone based - may eventually go on to the Grangers as well when the HS12 runs out. I've always been a believer in treating the leather with a product which needs to be rubbed into the leather as opposed to any sort of spray - cheers :)

I am not convinced by the new product, I have always used Nikwax dubbing that has to be rubbed in which was great but I will now be changing to another brand. Sno seal has been highly recomended to me but I have not tried it yet. I have Scarpa Ranger GTX (Goretex) which have never let me down.
