Satnav Co-ordinates for Car Parking for WalkHighlands Walks

Satnav Co-ordinates for Car Parking for WalkHighlands Walks

Postby sloosh » Mon Dec 14, 2009 3:47 pm

I found it tremendously fiddly and not terribly accurate to load up my car sat nav (TomTom) using just the touch screen on the device (or the PC interface for operating the unit) and so decided to come up with a more accurate, quicker and useful way to do it using longitude and latitude co-ordinates instead.

Using Google Earth I've plotted the car parking co-ordinates for every munro walk available on Walkhighlands (where possible). I've given a number of them a trial run and they are very accurate.

Here are some screencaps of my TomTom car satnav to demonstrate how to use them:

1.jpg
Locate the 'Navigate to' screen

2.jpg
You may have to click the arrow button a couple of times to get to the longitude / latitude screen

3.jpg
Punch in the co-ordinates exactly as they are below

Job done!

You probably want to try these out just to make sure they work. You can do that on Google Maps -- just copy and paste the set of co-ordinates you wish to test.

NOTE: In Google Maps, sometimes the location is shown as a red placemarker and sometimes a green arrow near a red placemarker. Not sure why this is.

Is it possible to create a single POI file for people to load into their GPS units?

I recently put one into my hill GPS - a single POI file with coordinates for every listed hill. They now show up on the map as I scroll about.

It could probably be done but tbh, it's not worth it. These co-ordinates are only for parking and nothing else so loading up several hundred parking spaces as POI's seems kinda pointless.

I get what you're saying, but on ViewRanger GPS on my phone (and I presume on most GPS units) you can install a POI file and choose when you want to display it. That sounds easier than referring to a list you have saved elsewhere each time.

Wow thanks a lot! This is going to be incredibly useful. I often spend a ridiculous amount of time trying to figure out where to park at the start of a walk

Call me old-fashioned if you like but it's not that hard to find a car park using a map! :? This seems like a lot of bother to me. But then I am very low tech.

I see what you mean. Load up one file and it's all there for whenever you go out. I'll have a look at creating a POI file but I have a feeling it will take up an unwarranted amount of time and effort to create it.

You're welcome. :) (It's really handy)

Yes, you're right... for some walks. For others it's waay too easy to zip past a layby or difficult to locate an offtrack car park and that's what this is great for.

Hello,
Thought I was the only one who had problems with 'the starts' ...big navigation problem at the beginning of the day sometimes...driving along fiddling with my OS map...Only once started up the wrong entrance track! Is OS map reading while driving an offence as is mobile phone use on the go? However I have no Tom Tom thing to assist me. I think that I might need old Caberfeidh with me help out with the latitudes and longtidutes? Don't these come out of the machine in OS coordinates? I can see the use of these!

Oop's,
I'm not with the 'moderns'....have I just realised....maybe even correctly? that these things actually talk to you....so even if it spoke in serbo-croat so long as it matched up with what you have input all should be well.....what does it say? ....'you have arrived'? Never used one of these or have been in a motor with one fitted.

Yes, they tell you when you're coming up to junctions, which way to go and when "you have arrived at your destination". There are different voices you can get as well with some of them only playing a sound to indicate an event like a junction or whatever. I prefer a spoken voice myself. If you want, there's even an Ozzy Osbourne version that tells you you have reached your ffff***ing destination.

Call me old-fashioned if you like but it's not that hard to find a car park using a map! :? This seems like a lot of bother to me. But then I am very low tech.

looking at a map is fine but it's a wee bit tricky when you're driving! Much easier to be directed to my destination by Darth Vader

Using Google Earth I've plotted the car parking co-ordinates for every munro walk available on Walkhighlands (where possible). I've given a number of them a trial run and they are very accurate.

Here are some screencaps of my TomTom car satnav to demonstrate how to use them:

Superb, absolutely superb, poor Paul, another thing to add to his list of things to do on the site that just keeps getting longer and longer! Anyone say a wiki is maybe in order soonish?

Thanks. :)

I did feel a teensy bit guilty about laying this on Paul and Helen but I did try to do as much as I could. :?

That might not be a bad idea although those things are susceptible to vandalism, especially from automated spamming software so there needs to be a dedicated pool of volunteers.

You could always pull in for a second, look at the map and then carry on! I do prefer the simple solution to problems!
