New Year's Day, let's get up a hill, the first of 2013 and the first for me in about two weeks. Late start, left house at 0930hrs and arrived at the Glen Lethnot parking area just before 1030hrs. Fine sunny day and clear skies for once, just had to be careful on the minor roads up the glen for ice. The access road up the glen followed the West Water Burn, and crossed it at the bridge at Stonyford, 200m on there is a place for off road carparking on the South side, directly opposite the access track to the right of way track to over to Tarfside. Walk along road the way you came passing over a small bridge and take the access road to the farm at Auchowrie. The road runs adjacent to a small burn on the left, the road turns to the right, which you follow nearly to the farmyard buildings, where there is a gate on your left. Pass through gate (climb) and cross grass field near the radio mast and head for another gate out of the field onto the South West shoulder of Hill of Wirren.

Off road Carparking, with space for 3 or 4 cars

Tarmacadam road up toAuchowrie Farm
3.JPG
Once you pass through the second gate at the rear of the farm buildings there is a section of grass, heather with various minor paths through, after about 200m you come across an unmarked track
4.JPG
Looking back down Glen Lethnot. On the Left is an area suggested that a proposed wind farm may be built. I do hope they don't! ( Peat Hill- Mount Sned)
5.JPG
Further on you pass a cairn built on the hillside. The track runs out at 484m grid ref 510735, from then on you follow a path up over the shoulder
6.JPG
A fine wee path nice and dry underfoot conditions
7.JPG
Once on the summit there are various paths to follow, take your pick heading off in the direction of the Summit Trig point
8.JPG
Ah the dreaded peat hags as described earlier in Malky's report, yes but today NO NEED FOR THE GAITERS EVEN, nice and frosty which will take my weight, wonderful
9.JPG
Summit trig point, there in less than an hour, no problem. Fine views over to Mount Battock

View over to Mount Keen. All in all a perfect short day for the winter. One and a half hours and back at the car, and back home for lunch. To make a longer day you can easily add West and East Wirren to your journey.

Nice pics - looks like we were having the best of the weather in this part of the country. Nice day for a wee leg stretch! Haven't done this hill yet but it's on the list now :)

heatheronthehills, make sure you keep it for a frosty day, or you could get lost in all the peat hags

Lovely day for it. It's highly likely this will also be my first Graham of 2013 as it's the only left in the area. I'll have to think of another walk report title now

Hhhmmmm..............thanks for this!!

Today was family "stuff" and I got dirty looks for staring out the window and pointing out how nice a day it was (apparently the other half interpreted my body language as "I wish I was out walking rather than being stuck here with you lot" - as if!).

As you say, looks like a good winter walk. Looking at the map I'm thinking East Wirren - Hill of Wirren - West Wirren then down to the right of way and back by Tillybardine??

Hope you had a good New Year!!!

Know what you mean about dirty looks :) That's why I decided to cut it short, to keep in the good books, hoping to get out again on Thursday, forecast not bad. That would make a good day as you suggest starting East Wirren and over the Hill to West Wirren, there also seems to be a lot of additional tracks on the hills and the Tillybardine point would tie in with the Right of Way over to Tarfside. Not sure how easily it is to cross the West Water when you are heading up to the East Wirren or if indeed there are many parking areas apart from the one I used. Have a good New Year, and may see you on the hills sometime.

I see your Corbetts and Grahams totals are impressive, something I must improve on this year. Hope you have a nice day as I did when you do it, make sure it's frosty though, or those gaiters are going to be needed :D

Lovely weather 8) . Great to get out on the 1st. Was looking at your report of Creigh Hill and hoping to get up there today, but got up far too late  . Settled for a wander up Dundee Law instead.

Hi malky, I took my gaiters just in case after reading your report, but really did not need them, wonderful thing FROST!. Yes Creigh hill would have been good today, cracking bit of sun, LONG OVERDUE. Maybe get out again on Thursday for something local like Glen Isla, fingers crossed. Look forward to seeing your report :)

Hi graeme, the day went well, now to try and knock off some of the ones you have done at Glen Isla (not looking forward to the Crock and Hare Hill though) thinking of a way I can do the both together without getting lost in the woods  , and there is always Mile Hill again from another direction, fingers crossed Thursday.
