A Borders trip, Eildon Hills & Black Hill

Forecast was dry down Melrose way so headed down the Borders to walk the Eildon Hills. This was to be my last trip of the year along with Kim and it was a nice easy end to the year. We initially tried to come from the south up St Cuthberts Way but parking was a problem so we drove round and did the walk from the golf course. The Walkhighlands route starts from the Abbey and this may be a better option as our route up after crossing the burn at the golf course was very muddy but higher up was ok. The path took us between the two hills and firstly we climbed the Marilyn and then over to the other one and back to a craggy bit where we got shelter out the wind for lunch. There is also a smaller top to the south which we didn't bother with. We returned firstly taking the path that leads back to the Abbey and leaving it to walk alongside the burn back to the car. 2hrs in total.

Once at the car we drove up to walk Black Hill and driving up the B6356 there is parking for 2-3 cars at the start of the walk which is waymarked. The signs lead you along the side of the farm and then up a track which follows the tree line to the ridge of Black hill. An easy ridge walk takes you to the summit. We returned the same way. The was a nice wee walk with an easy gradual climb all the way to the summit. 1hr for this one.

Thanks JC, another virgin s2000 report is always good to see. Just realised I've been along that road before to 'Scott's View' (just below Bemersyde Hill), worth a little drive up if you take in this hill. Wasn't into hillwalking at this point though, but a trip back to take in Black Hill is in order, good that its near the A68 too.

Johnny...........one week yer up my local hills, the following yer in the Eildons which are equally familiar to me as my grandparents were from St Boswells and I used to be up these every summer with them I've not been up em for ages but they haven't changed a bit, cheers for the blast from the past ...........still can't believe you did these off the back of Dumgoyne & Earls Seat..........what are the chances

Headed up the Eildons yesterday, you weren't kidding about the mud!!! A good walk though once we got higher up, cracking views of the Borders,nice to see a local hill on WH, thanks for the report!

The Eildons are a good walk, good to see them again. Havent done Black Hill yet, this has put it in mind, so thanks. That Rubers Law must be a fine viewpoint, you can see it from loads of places, so must work well in reverse.
