Postby DarrenJeffrey » Wed Jan 23, 2013 9:59 am

Hi

Would anyone be interested in teaching me to map read this Sunday at the Pentlands near Edinburgh. Ill pay £30 for a few hours.

As ill be using the skills learnt to do solo walki g I'd prefer someone extremely confident in their own ability

Thanks

Use your dosh to join a club and some club members will teach you map reading and how to read the lay of the land, weather conditions, etc. for nothing. And you'll have money left over for the pub afterwards....

You might be interested in going on one of these days - great feedback from previous courses run by Heather Morning.

Following the rapid filling up of the first two Navigation courses for Walkhighlands members for 4/5 May 2013, two further dates have been made available. The courses are provided by the MCofS, via its Mountain Safety Adviser Heather Morning.

The additional dates are Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th July. This time the courses will be held in the Campsies north of Glasgow. The courses are aimed at anyone who wants to learn how to navigate for hillwalking or to brush up existing knowledge. The courses are very friendly and will also provide a chance to meet with other Walkhighlands users. Places are limited to 12 on each day and bookings are now being taken by the MCofS (01738 493 942). The courses are run on a not-for-profit basis at the great price of £35 and includes free one year membership of the MCofS.

The navigation course will provide a gentle introduction to the theory followed by a practical session on the hill alongside other Walkhighlands users. Ratios are 1:6 and there are spaces for 12 people per course (the minimum age is 18 years). You will need to be equipped for a day out on the hill with food and drink, boots, gaiters, waterproof jacket and overtrousers, warm hat and gloves or mitts and a map case or clear poly bag. Maps and compasses will be provided.

To book a place please phone 01738 493 942 and mention that you want to book the Walkhighlands Navigation Course on either 6th or 7th July, you can also email membership@mcofs.org.uk but phoning will ensure you get a place as the last two dates filled up fast.

If you want to do some background reading before your lesson:
http://www.mcofs.org.uk/navigators-dozen.asp

You could also get a map of an area you know, go for a walk and try to relate the features on the map to what you can see around you.

Darren get a life. Join a club or just go walking with some experienced guys and girls on this site and learn. WH are running courses on navigation that you could sign up to but there is nothing better than walking with experienced walkers which as far as I am concerned would be a prerequisite for the course.

Just get out there with the rest of us and learn your trade :D
