The Far Eastern and Eastern Fells have had more than their share of Lakeland's snow recently. You describe it as a crisp walk. Was the deeper snow consolidated, or were there still places where you were sinking in to a depth? Given the recent easterly winds, I'd imagine the deepest snow drifts would have been on the western flanks, on your journey to and from The Knott. Were they? I'm thinking about a similar round soon, but including High Raise and without The Knott.
It's good to see you got a decent day to be out on these hills.
It was a cold frosty morning so the snow had quite a hard crust on it but as the day wore on the crust weakened and was not strong enough to take a persons weight. The drifts were quite large but mainly compact enough not to sink in to the full depth although there was a soft more recent layer on top. Crampons and ice axe were very useful in places and it was quite hard going but very enjoyable. I didn't consider it dangerous as long as you have the correct equipment.
