On route to the Pen-y-fan horseshoe we stopped off at a friends, at a place called Crickhowel as this was going to be our base for days 4 and 5 of our week away. This was my first visit to Wales so the accent was a bit different
thats for sure and it took a bit of getting used to. So back to the walk, it was only meant to be wee walk just to keep our legs supple basically to walk Fern
. So of we went and as usual with these walks finding somewhere safe to park and close to the start of the walk is offten the biggsest issue of the day, but surprisingly this time it was fairly easy. So parked at the wee sub station we set off up the sign posted track opposite and basically followed the finger posts utill we got out on to the hill proper, we then used our savvy and did a bit of a short cut to the summit of Pen Cerrig-calch.which was easy really. Then on to Pen Allt-maur which turned out to be a bit farther away than it looked, especially in the wind that had just seemed to pick up (it seemed to follow us from the Lakes) so off we set following very obvious paths over Cairngorm type terrain with very flat plateau-ish walking. Just then about the single fir tree that grows in the middle of the walk I saw the first of very little wildlife I saw all week and that was 5 grouse
. Onn we went and soon we were at the summit of Pen Allt-maur and with a quick photo it was time to get going, and then as we turned in to return we felt the full force of the wind in our faces, and it was bloomin freezin with snow showers around it was just a matter of time when we were in the middle of one
On we went and soon back to Pen Cerrig-calch we were hit by the first shower and it was wild, only 15 mins of it but we were white from head to toe and pleased to see the back of it
On we went though and soon we were in sight of Table Mountain, not quite what you might expect an awfull lot smaller in height and stature to its namesake in South Africa but still it was a perfect we site for a small fort in its time with good views all around from East to West and a good distance South. So we had a tea break in the Gorse just before the summit in the sunshine and out of the wind
Tourist stuff done and it was back on to the paths and finger posts and before we knew it we were back at the main road with just a 5 min walk down hill to the car. All done in around 4 hours.
