Skin so soft

Skin so soft

Postby midgebite » Tue May 28, 2013 3:18 pm

I'm looking to get some skin so soft to keep the midges from biting the kids when we venture to the Loch Ness area towards the end of June, i have been on the Avon website but there are so many different skin so soft products, can anyone tell me which is the one i should get?

I'd agree with RicKamila re smidge. I also use Lifesystems insect repellant esp the expedition plus although it is 50% DEET which some don't like. I've tried skin-so-soft but found that the midges still landed and got stuck whereas the repellants help keep them away. I also find that the midge head nets work well and can usually be bought for £3 or £4 each.

I agree with Rick, Smidge is excellent. skin so soft smells awful and makes my skin sore, also it doesn't work on me.

I've used Smidge before and it seems to be OK.

Also think I heard somewhere that the chemical in Avon Skin so soft which made it so good for midge repelling has been removed from the formula?

Yes, skin so soft will make you smell like a cheap bordello, and I can say from personal experience that the recent forumulation apparently no longer contains whatever it was that used to make it effective. The guy who runs my local outdoor shop swears by Smidge. I haven't yet had a chance to test it myself but every other product he's recommended to me has been top notch.

Mrs Flyer bought me some Skin so soft a few years ago after I mentioned about being eaten alive, don't think I have ever used it  Just checked the cupboard & it is still sitting there albeit half full, so maybe it evaporates after a few years of neglect

Thanks everyone, i looked at smidge but its not suitable for children under 30 months, my little boy is 20 months, is there anything else that anyone can recommend. Don't want to buy the avon stuff if its no longer any good at repelling insects. Or maybe pray to the weather gods for a stiff breeze with wall to wall sunshine. 8)

Jungle Formula also works well, and has lots of choices in its range.

I have had a bog myrtle preparation called stop-bite before, and I think it works pretty well.. Natural ingredients, so I think it would maybe be suitable.. :D

The active ingredient in Skin So Soft is (or was) citronella - lemon grass oil. I bought some on eBay before walking the WHW; I was travelling light and preferred a tiny bottle of oil to a big one of lotion.

But pure citronella oil is even less suitable for small children. I've got some experience working with essential oils and would not recommend anybody to use them without proper knowledge about them.
On the positive side, I've made some good experiences with walnut oil, the same that can be used for salads.
