After a failed attempt at Bruach Na Frithe a few weeks ago, I was even more determined to bag my first Munro!Moved to Glasgow on Monday so it didn't take long until I was planning to go, unfortunately a bit more planning would have been good! Didn't get a map and after a brief search on here couldn't find a mapped route, so just had the written instructions from here vaguely in my head... too vaguely as it turned out! Below is the accidental route I took, definitely overshot the path!!!

Definitely too far round!

It was pretty much scrambling the whole way up, not clever! Just kept heading up in the hope I'd find a cairn!

After a lot of scrambling I reach a plateau

When I did get to the top, it was all of a sudden, and having ready about many false summits I thought at first that I wasn't at the top of Ben Vane (yet again, map would have been useful!).

It wasn't until the walk down when I found the path that I realised if I'd gone up that way there would have been lots of false summits. I got on google maps back down at the road then I knew it was Ben Vane!

That would be one of the false summits!

So bit of an anti climax, think I was expecting something much scarier after the Cuillins! Managed to get a bit burnt as it was so hot and sunny, my sunblock couldn't beat the sweat. I drunk 5 litres of water in 5 hours thanks to the lovely July heat wave! Planning on doing Ben Lomond in a couple of weeks which by all accounts is even easier!

Well done on your 1st.

I've still to do Vane & Vorlich, might have to rectify that soon

Hi,,well done on getting there,, I did a similar route (intentionally) some years ago,,up to the dam, over to Ben Dubh then south to Vane and off the steep way.

The picture thing seems to be an issue,,Ive uploaded pics in the same way, from the same camera on here for a couple of years,,only recently have I had issues and had to resize. Maybe an admin change on the site,,seems to coincide with various terminations of connections,,even when im not uploading pics.

Anyway,,welcome to Glasgow and happy climbing!

As for Lomond being easier,,its certainly less steep for the whole,,but do yourself a favour and go up the Ptarmigan ridge route, then off by the main path,,MUCH better route , better views, bit more interesting too. (in my humble opinion) All the best.

Sorry you didn't get your pics up. It would have been good to see them as the day I was on top we were in cloud and saw nothing at all!

Enjoy Ben Lomond which was my first Munro 50 years ago. :D

Well done ! I was also on ben Vane that day, You may have passed me ( bald guy with wee Westie ) If it was you , well done as you ran most of the way down . It was incredibly hot and I spoke to 4 experienced walkers who chucked it half way up.
