What operating system do you have on your computer? There will probably be a program on it that will do the job.

Google Picasa does it. I use it to reduce the size of my photos (they are 2MB each). You can change the size of all JPGs in the folder in one go. You can also add watermarks to your photos. The program is free to download here:

I'm sure there are other programs doing this job. Adobe Photoshop does, but one picture at a time so it is a bit inconvenient when you have 50 or 80 pictures to reduce

Irfanview http://www.irfanview.com/ is quite useful for resizing/renaming batches of photos and is also free!

We haven't changed the max size - it's still 690px as before for forum photos.

However what changed is that we have prevented our server from attempting to resize much larger photos which a few users were uploading, as the numbers being uploaded was leading to the forum slowing or stopping the website. Resizing photos requires alot of server memory - so it can't really be done if several users are requesting it at once. Much better to do it on your own computer using one of the suggested programs - this will mean you can upload the photos many times faster too. Better still, you could simply use something like Flickr to host your photos and simply hotlink them from your reports (Flickr gives you the code to do this from forums).

Thanks for the links, my computer is windows vista. Don't understand why it happened as i'm still using same camera and cropped photo before trying to upload it.

Just really started out hill walking and have been using your site for all my hints and tips. Great site. I am looking to print off maps but when I try it only prints a tiny section of the map in the top left hand corner. I am not great with computers and any help would be appreciated. Also what is the map scales for each increment on the zoom function of the map. (ie Totally zoomed in would be what scale? Second increment -what scale and so on.)
As to GPS systems - I was looking at Garmin Etrex 10 and was wondering how easy it would be to upload files from the site for chosen walks? Would it give me a visual representation of the walk on a handheld screen or just grid references?

Having the same problem as Muzzy - printing route maps (or saving them as images) only gives me a very small (200x200) part of the map.

Printing issues

It's not a Walkhighlands configuration thing, it's down to your browser - as there are so many different combinations of computer hardware and software it's really tricky to give printing advice via a forum.

If you do a forum search (using the 'Search forums' link next to the magnifying glass at the top right of the white area of the page) you'll find a load of useful tips, though here's a useful link:

Hi Chris. You can edit out all the text and photos of a report, make it private and set the date back at any time. If you want the last remnant of the post removed, send me a pm with the details. As this usually involves removing other posters' posts as well (replies), it isn't available for users to do themselves.

I am logged in automatically when I visit the site and that is confirmed at the top of the page, but when I open the 'Hills' tab it says that I need to log in. I have tried logging in manually but the same thing happens. This occurs when using a Kindle Fire. If I use my pc there is no problem.

Any suggestions on how to correct the situation re the Kindle?
