Kinder Scout - Boring plateau/fantastic edge walk

If you get chance to visit the peak district, please don't be put off by the boring Kinder Scout summit/plateau walk - if you choose to walk the edge of this escarpment (on a clear day & that's quite often these days) the views are fantastic. Even better if you can manage a day with a strong south-westerly wind, the famous Kinder downfall blowback is visible from up to 40 miles away (totally amazing to view).
I personally would suggest the route up Grindsbrook Clough and along plateau edge past jacobs ladder to the kinder downfall, you can then carry on and do the complete summit edge, or return back via jacobs ladder.
Grindsbrook is really pretty in Autumn & the small shale pools & waterfalls really are worth a look - very easy scramble at top. Kinder low is somewhat dissapointing and very boggy if it's rained (nr. to the downfall) - I well remember lost boots during my Duke of Edinburgh some years ago in the rain & it wasn't much fun then.
Please be aware though that the fog/cloud can & does descend very quickly & map & compass & navigation are quite often required - there are some pretty steep drops, but lots of escape routes too.

Also just down the road at castleton, cave dale is well worth visiting, and a little further out is the low level walk of Lathskill Dale, which is truelly stunning - take the Cale Dale route to it & I promise you won't be dissapointed - the water is crystal clear !

I second that! When I was a teenager Edale was the only place with hills I could easily get to (by train), so alot of my earliest walking adventures were on Kinder, Rushup Edge, Lose Hill or Win Hill. We used to camp by the farm out of the village on the road towards Jacob's Ladder. The Kinder Edges circuit is a real peakland classic
