Must do hills in Angus/Aberdeenshire

Must do hills in Angus/Aberdeenshire

Postby Backpacker » Thu Oct 24, 2013 12:21 pm

With winter approaching and me moving, I've been looking at the various walks in the area, just wondering what one's shouldn't be missed.

I've got Mount Keen lined up for next weekend

Dunsinane and it's surround hills are worth a visit. Not very high but the views are cracking on a clear day

If I only have an afternoon or so, I head up Bennachie for an easy walk and being outdoors a bit, if I have a whole day or more, I usually head to the Cairngorms, Braemar is just an hour and a half away from Aberdeen...
Lochnagar is a good choice too if you don't have too much time on your hands

Hi Backpacker, just done Bennachie, pick a good day and do the whole circuit, fine walking on good paths once your on the summit, makes for a fine day out, remember to include the wee 2000er to the South, see my report :D Cannot advise on any other Aberdeenshire hills as I have not done many, so might meet up with you some time on thehils :) As for Angus hills just ask, know them pretty well as they are local to me. I would join you on Keen, but Im down South just now! :(

There is Clachnaben - worth it for the rocky tor despite its small stature. You can combine with mount battock to make a day of it :)
Anyone mentioned Ben Rinnes? It's pretty special too..
But I think the best aberdeenshire walks are the ones wandering the countryside in search of stone circles/forts/standing stones/castles/pictish henges - just pick out some on a map and decide how you are getting between them on the ground once you get there. Never know what you might come across, so it makes for good times :)

It's a surprisingly hard hill to climb, despite it's size, isn't it?

Ooh sounds like a challenge

I assuming it's also worth doing it alongside Battock?

I've never done both, but yeah, Clachnaben is a Sunday afternoon walk by itself so I'd do both if you're looking for a full day in the hills.

If you're taking a dog with you, I'd be careful as you approach Battock at this time of year, it's in a very active estate with plenty of evidence of shooting and sheep grazing. I saw a couple of the estate workers (I did Battock by itself) when I went up from the Edzell end and they never said anything about the dog, but I was glad I'd taken the lead or I'd have ended up carrying her most of the walk. :-)

Pressendye circuit is good and it is nae to far fae Morven if ye wanted to do both in one day. or there is 2 sub 2000 ers near by as well Craiglich and Benaquhallie they would take a hour or so each. Cairn William is good as well.

If you do Mount Keen from Glen Esk Side, from the same parking area the Graham Hunt Hill is a great Winter walk up the side of the water fall at the south end of Loch Lee.
I have a TR from a few years back of my route.

By far the best TR I saw of this hill was by MalkyC. Check his trip out.

Dave.

Clachnaben is very easy. It is a simple walk to the summit round the back of the crag.

If you do Mount Keen, do it from Ballater, you get a right good walk through some very bonny spots on them mounth roads ;)

And aye, Clachnaben is just about the easiest hill you could walk I would say

Morven is a nice Corbett to do just North of Ballater and gives great views into Royal Deeside and the Cairngorms. Also a nice walk is the Gordon Way from Bennachie to the Suie Car Park (12 miles). Highest point is only 425m but gives great views over to Clachnaben, Mount Keen and Lochnagar. You will need two cars or to arrange a lift back from one car park to the other though....

Lochnagar and Bennachie are the standout Aberdeenshire hills in my opinion.

Moray: Ben Rinnes, and perhaps the Bin of Cullen for the sea views.

Angus: Corrie Fee (which can be extended to Mayar & Driesh). Also Reekie Linn waterfall on a wet day.
