Sorry if I came across as argumentative, Clive. Worcestershire Beacon is a Marilyn. I've always wanted to do the Malverns. They look really nice hills.

Worcestershire Beacon is a Marilyn? Brilliant! At least I can claim to have climbed at least one (literally hundreds of times....). A there and back walk along the entire length of the Malverns is a decent walk of 18 miles, and I would recommend it.

Bredon Hill is one as well - seem to remember you writing a report for that. And Cleeve Hill Beyond that, you're in a bit of a backwater...

I walked the length of the Malverns in 1979, it was a lovely day and there were hundreds of remote control planes on one of the hills. What boxes can I tick? that would be nice!

I've just found a website that is surely the Trainspotters book of hills - http://www.hill-bagging.co.uk

It is quite basic, but the number of lists are unbelievable!

To answer your question, 8(!) of the Malverns feature on at least one list.

That site lists 67 different lists for goodness sake!! All very worrying.

Oh yes, and plenty of others too I'm sure (Gallows Hill, which I went up the day before is almost certainly one. Bet there's a couple in here as well). But I'd rather not look at the list for the time being or I'll be chasing all of the conifer infested bobbles within 50 miles of home before I know it

Just to add a further surreal? touch to this thread, there is a dedicated community of trig point baggers out there and there are over 13,500 trig points in the uk, not failing to bow to those other benighted individuals who are set upon visiting every map contour top!! Trainspotting doesn't get near these for obsessional lunacy.

We don't even have Tumps where I live on the Canadian prairies. For my trip to Scotland next May, I have the back end of my treadmill raised so I can get my legs prepared for ascents and descents. A few Tumps, humps or even bumps would be welcomed.

I think most hill baggers are obsessional lunatics to a greater or lesser degree. I'm all for it. It beats a lot of other obsessions such as spending a fortune on seeing your football team getting beaten

I signed up to http://www.hill-bagging.co.uk last month and ticked off everything I climbed (including M, C and G tops and HUMPs) - just out of curiosity
Suddenly, I discovered, that I have so far bagged 301 tops that classify as something, including 47 Munro tops and 277 SIMs (whatever a SIM is)... Yet, it only makes 5.44% of all classified tops of any kind in the UK

Seriously, it's bordering on madness! I'd rather stick to my Munro list But good luck to all those who are brave enough to tackle all classifications.

There'll be a few people on this website who are also on the hill-bagging one. I use the same name on that site and I've seen Foggieclimber on the lists aswell.
There's a good local hump for you Malky. I climbed it recently and it's called "Carnferg". I always wondered what that cairn was all about, on the top of the hill that you can see on the road coming in to Aboyne. It's the somewhat-bare hill, tucked behind the forest-clad ones. I liked it because it's a pleasant walk. It's a real dog-walkers one but the views from the top are great and the location is placid.

I have decided the Humps aren't for me , except when they are
I am not bagging them , and I don't seek them out .
However sometimes there is a wee gem of a hill which happens to be a Hump.
If so I will go for it

For example that wee hill above Corrour station
If you have travelled that far and the cloud is down on Beinn na Lap , then do the wee hill

Why in mountaineering/hillwalking are we so fascinated by lists - years ago people used to look at maps and work out their own varied ways (work out how many different walking routes you can find for an ascent of Ben Nevis). Yes Munro's table existed back then, but few people before the mid 1970s bothered with it. Now there are well worn paths up all the 'Munro Routes'.

Hazard a guess that the majority of hillwalkers are men and we just love lists, being all pre-pubescent boys at heart , having never lost that innocent enjoyment of ticking something off as seen or done. Sort of trainspotting with boots on .
