8 person group with mixed ability and fitness.
Weather was overcast with cloud base below 600m. Patchy light drizzle, temperature 10-14deg, no wind
Group management required on ridges as visibility <20m for most of the day.
Used bearing from map and timings. Pacing not required as ridge line was obvious.
Started at Rhyd Ddu car park, parked 2 cars at grid ref 496511 at path junctions at the end of the walk, this is a linear ridge walk.
Started at 0930 in Westerly direction. 1:30hrs to first summit 'Y Garn.' Followed SW bearing and spotted 'Clogwyn Marchnad' ridge in between a break in the cloud. No view from ridge, scrambling was Grade 1 and good fun, with plenty of route choices. 'Mynydd Drws-y-coed' second summit, used map orientation to follow ridge around from SW to NW direction then strike out SW across saddle. Ridge carried on in W direction, placed an experienced team member at back of group to check group was all together. Found wall and approached 2m Obelisk on 'Mynydd Tal-y-nignedd' for lunch. Group quiet at lunch as visibility still <20m. Carried on SW to end of spur then descent down to 'Bwlch Dros-bern' saddle, arrived at rock step crags of 'Craig Pennant', route finding challenging, had to contour around to NW to find a easier route up through the broken boulder field crags. Route finding from Cairn(734m) to 'Garnedd-goch' (700m) challenging as the summit plateau was featureless, so used N ridge line to hand rail until 'wall' found at 518499, followed wall SW ascending to wall junctions and BROKEN trig point at summit., multiple bearing taken on wall directions to figure out descent path. Decision made at wall path junction (ref 507492) not to go for final summit at 'Mynydd Graig Goch' due to poor visibility and timing. Followed path NW but was looking for path junction on LEFT, should have been on RIGHT of track (ref 505495). Consequently thought wall corner at 501499 was the wall corner at ref 505503. Team member spotted cars on the far hill slope which then confirmed map position. Traversed hummock grass and boggy ground NE to meet correct path, then back to cars. Detour cost 30mins.
Everyone happy, enjoyed day, would do the reverse in good weather.
