Mell Fells and Gowbarrow

These three small hills on the north western edge of the Lake District can be joined together by a longish circular walk.
I parked in a layby at The Hause just south of Little Mell Fell. From here it's only a short climb up to the summit - not very pleasant on this occasion as it was freezing cold and wet, and there was no view.The weather impoved later in the day.

returning to the Hause I then followed the road down towards Ullswater before turning right onto a path which goes through Swinburn Park and up to Gowbarrow Fell.

As well a s the summit with the trig point I also visited another summit just to the south which, according to recent measurements, is actually slightly higher.

I then followed the path which runs alongside the wall towards Dockray before turning right onto a path signposted to Ulcat Row.

From Ulcat Row it's a bit more than a mile along minor roads to the base of Great Mell Fell. There's a good path up to the top, although it was a bit boggy on the summit.

Great Mell Fell is covered with lots of gnarly little trees which look like they've been blown out of shape by the wind.

On the way back to the car, the footpath between Brownrigg and Greenhow farms was very muddy. It probably would have been easier to go back along the road.

A good three fells to link. As you say, the low level paths can get wet and then it's perhaps better to accept a bit of road walking.

I found the paths a bit difficult even if summer - it was somewhere around Brownrigg farm that I got impaled on barbed wire! Nice little hills, though.

Good walk linking all three, I've done them all separately !
