Heavenly Helvellyn Inversion.

With the very real prospect of a cloud inversion forecast, I headed to Thirlmere, to take the quick route up to Helvellyn, which is widely touted as the place to be in such weather. Looked promising as I set off with low cloud covering the area!!

With not much to see, it was head down and up the path, with fingers crossed

I emerged from the cloud at Browncove Crags, overjoyed that the forecast was right

All around was a sea of cloud, I will just let the photo's speak for themselves

Scafell range.

Skiddaw fells.

Blencathra.

Crinkles to Great End

Zoom to Grey Friar, Pike o' Blisco & Cold Pike.

East to Cross Fell

The Dodds ridge from Browncove Crags

Catstycam, High Street & Helvellyn.

Stopped to have lunch at the cross shelter. As I was leaving, someone appeared, as if he had climbed up the front of Helvellyn, from Red Tarn. Turns out it was probably the Fell Top assessor, as he reported at 12.20 and I was leaving @ 12.15!! Certainly picks his routes Made for Nethermost Pike, High Crag and Dollywagon from here.

From Dollywagon, I made my way to the track to take me down to Wythburn Church, disappointed that I had to leave such a spectacle behind. You will notice the walk took 8 hours, but in reality, I stayed out 8 hours and it was well worth it

Lovely. The pic of Striding edge is especially good. You usually head to the height for the wonderful panoramic views you can get but cloud inversions like this make trips worthwhile. you usually have to fly to be above the clouds.
