Who Was Peter J Trowell?

Who Was Peter J Trowell?

Postby Lightfoot2017 » Thu Jul 16, 2015 9:40 am

I was walking in Corrour yesterday when I came upon Peters Stone, with the memorial plaque to Peter J Trowell.

https://geolocation.ws/v/W/File%3APeter's%20Rock%20-%20geograph.org.uk%20-%201657321.jpg/-/en

Very sad to think that someone (not yet 30yrs) should lose their life so young. Had he lived, Peter would be 66 this year. But it got me wondering: who was Peter J Trowell? Was he a walker or climber who lost his life in the area? Or someone who had a love of the area and just wanted to be remembered there? I've tried googling but no luck.

It would be nice to connect a real ‘person’ to the name and the plaque.

Any insights, info, pointers greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I found this on a thread on scottishhills.com

"Peter Trowell was an ex-warden of Loch Ossian SYH who over-wintered alone at the hostel working on refurbishment and when he didn't check-in as scheduled was found to be missing.

His body was found only when the Loch unfroze some weeks later - it is presumed he was working at the Loch side or on the old boat mooring and went through the ice and perished but the whole story will never be known. Note the inscription reads, "Died March 1979" - as the exact date can never be established.

Scurrulous rumours continue to suggest that he may have taken his own life, but this is discounted firmly if you talk to anybody who knew him first hand. He was not that sort of man.

I have a friend a song and a glass
Gaily along lifes road I pass
Joyous and free out of doors for me
Over the hills in the morning.

I can think of worse epitaphs. RIP Peter."

Hopefully this is correct.

Many thanks for your help here, Sparky. Much appreciated.

How terribly tragic. Knowing this now just intensifies the sadness surrounding the whole thing when you can now put a ‘life’ to the story of Peters Stone.

R.I.P. Peter J Trowell

To hi-jack slightly....Lightfoot, did you then walk to Dalwhinnie arriving at the train station yesterday evening? If so, I was the cyclist just getting there at the same time - hello again!
