Rucksacks ?

Hello again.

Another question about gear as i am upgrading a few things.

Does any one have any good quality rucksack recommendations for multi day trips. around the 50 - 70 litre range and below 2kg.

Currently looking at the Berghaus wilderness andthe Vango explorer which seems good for the price.

Does any one have experience with these ? or any other suggestions?

I needed a new rucksack last year and took ages to find one that fitted. Ended up with not one but two from Lightwave. A 60-litre almost unused from eBay and a 40-litre end of line reduced stock from GO.

I have seen them in only one place these days that stocks them (in Cardiff). I really don't know why they aren't more popular and more available - good-quality fabric, excellent no-nonsense design and uniquely among all rucksacks pretty damn waterproof. I was so impressed with it after three very wet days on Dartmoor. The 40-litre I use for summer overnighters and winter days.

As it's a "lightweight" pack though, the back is not adjustable.

I can't recommend this highly enough after buying one a few weeks ago:

Normal price is £145 but they're doing it for £50 less a penny at the moment (worth paying £3 for the waterproof cover to get the free postage for > £50 orders...)

I've managed to pack the entire contents of my 80l duffel bag into it, so it will take a LOT more than 50l, although it ends up looking like you're carrying a vertical sausage on your back Best of all, although it weighs just over 1.5kg, you can strip it back to under 1kg for lighter loads by removing the frame and the waist straps, both of which are quite substantial. It also strips down well for climbing with shock cords being removable. It takes crampons and ice axe well on the outside, too.

I have a fairly small back (I'm a 5'8" bloke) and a size A does me perfectly.

Depends on your kit, but the Osprey Talon 44 though on the smaller side is a good light pack if you are travelling light. Officially only 44L but feels a lot bigger with external pockets and a floating lid. I have got away with it for weekends - tent has to go strapped in survival bag on the outside if I am travelling solo.

Osprey packs seem to have a comfortable fit and lots of room for adjustment which is why I like them.

I'm very happy with my OMM Mountain Mover. 55+15 litre and 1.4kg. Be aware that the back is not adjustable though.

I can't find it on the OMM site, so it may have been discountined, but it is available from ultralightoutdoorgear (I'm not associated with them, just a satisfiedcustomer).

A great pack but not made anymore hence the lack of stock. Unfortunately the company who bought the pod sacs range seem to have deserted it.

Mine developed a fault in the frame and wear at the edges of the hip belt. Took some photos and sent them to Osprey via their website link. They replied and agreed to replace it despite the fact that it was over a year old - they sent the replacement to Cotswold where I bought the original - I picked it from them and dropped off the old one. Haven't tried it yet but looks good - one thing though is that it doesn't have the two external long zipped pockets which I found useful for waterproofs although the inside is probably bigger. Great service and can't really complain though - cheers
