This is nothing to do with the infamous Walk Highlands Quiz
To make this WR a tad different from the norm, I thought I would try a different approach in an effort to make Fionn Beinn sound an attractive target for any future adventurers
Question 1. How do you pronounce Fionn Beinn?
Answer - Fee on Ben (that's how I pronounce it and everyone immediately knows where you mean)
2. Would I be able to attract anyone else on my quest to conquer FB?
Yes, Callander Girl (Lynne)
Lynne about to burst into tears, FB wasn't that bad
3. Where is the start point?
Achnasheen, nice fair sized car park.
Looking back down towards Achnasheen
4. Are there any facilities nearby?
Yes rather nice public toilets, soap is even provided.
5. Is there a path?
Yes, but it does kind of disappear occasionally and we struggled to re-locate it.
6. Were many photo’s taken?
Thirteen, probably the fewest ever
7. What was the weather like?
Room for improvement, low cloud, drizzle
8. Was navigation easy?
Not exactly, mainly because we couldn’t see more than about 20m
9. Was progress easy?
It certainly seemed to be, we were constantly chatting, a bit like this WR, question and answer session
10. Was there a water feature to photograph?
Yes, but not quite a raging torrent
Water feature
Above zoomed
11. What was the terrain like?
Very damp grass, tufty in places
12. Were there any peat hags?
Yes, far too many and picking our way through was challenging
Walkers favourite terrain
13. Was there any snow?
Yes, probably above 700m
White stuff
14. How did you navigate when you were in cloud?
GPS trying to follow the WH route
15. Did you follow the WH easily?
No, we opted to keep to the east of the snow in the gully, with a plan to join the path/route higher up
16. Did the plan work?
Yes of course, we intercepted a path on high
17. What was it like on the summit?
Very windy and freezing cold
Summit shot, kindly taken by Lynne
18. Why are there no "proper" photos of the trig?
Because I couldn’t be bothered to linger and dig out my camera, however I asked Lynne to take a quick photo with my phone
19. What were the descent plans?
Lynne confessed that she had 'mislaid' - otherwise known as lost a pair of gloves on the ascent, so we decided to retrace our steps. Finding our ascent route was easy until we left the snow behind.
20. Did you find the gloves?
No, once we left the snow behind we decided to try and avoid the peat hags and we came to the conclusion that the gloves will need to be filed as lost property.
21. Did you meet any other fellow walkers?
No, not even any wildlife. I did see John's SEAT Leon in the car park when we got back. I knew John & Lee were thinking of paying FB a visit and I guess they had opted for another lie in
22. Did you utilise the new hydro track?
No, we contemplated maybe using it for the descent, if we could see or find it. As it turned out we saw no sign of it, until we were on the lower slopes.
23. Did you enjoy Fee on Ben?
As a walk, not really. It was good to finally find time to nip up and say hello. If the weather and underfoot conditions had been much better - possibly.
24. Next?
Possibly/probably a return to the Dundonnell area to wander up AT again, with an overnight stay followed by Lurg Mhor and Cheesecake, which looks like a monster day
