Brown Cow Hill, following in Gordie's footsteps

Gordie12 had done this one a couple of days ago and I had always marked this one to be done on the day I drove to Tomintoul for the AMC monthly meet at Tomintoul. I had read his report and thought I'd taken it in but no I did the same mistake as him followed the very inviting track on the right after passing the tree plantation and had to drop down between BCH and Carn Oighreag, I swear I even followed his size 12 footprints through the very same peat hags I was pleased to have reached the top ten minutes faster but this was to be later lost as I managed to overshoot the track when heading off through the thick heather and like him nearly to stand on a young grouse chick. Although there was a fair number of peat hags I found that walking in and along them was easier than jumping over and climbing up over the thick heather, might have been different had there been more rain though

Track heading towards a tree plantation, this should help on the return journey to identify where the track exists as its sitting quite low and coming from the West is difficult to see

After taking the track up Carn Oighreag and going too far West I came off to the South and headed for some peat hags which were quite easily by passed then started to climb the NE slopes of BCH where there are many more hags to pass through and more extensive this time

Nearing the 823 summit the underfoot conditions become much more pleasant and dry

823 summit cairn seems to have had a large stone added in the two days between Gordie's visit, Ben Avon in the distance

Happy to have started the Corbett bagging weekend, with more to come tomorrow, I hope

BCH summit cairn at 829m, from here I returned the shortest way to the track through the heather where I surprised lots of grouse and their chicks, and trying to miss as many peat hags on the way

After missing the track on the way back, now back on track so to speak with the tree plantation on my left

You can just see the feint path on the grassy mound to the left of the castle where you can leave the main track

Did this one in winter snow Rod......made those peat hags a joy, as the ground was nice and frozen

Not a bad hill though.......although it and its near Corbett neighbour get a bit of a bad press as being boring by some.

Glad to see I'm not the only person that can take the wrong route on such an easy and short wander
